French term

appui

French to English Medical Medical (general) Fracture of the lateral tibial plateau
Hello again

This is still about a man who was run over by a car and ended up with a fracture of the right lateral tibial plateau, with residual impairment following surgery.

Here is the context:

Il le reverra le 23 février 2010:

L'appui n'était toujours pas autorisé.
Il lui était demander de commencer à avoir un appui.

I understand that in the first instance this = Weight bearing was still not authorised, but what about the second example? Does this just mean a support of some kind? i.e. walking stick.

Thank you for any help!
Proposed translations (English)
5 +1 weight-bearing

Dear everybody, thank you all for your help. I am going on holiday early tomorrow morning, so although some of my questions may have been self-evident to some of you, when I am under pressure my brain stops. I really need a break. Wishing you all a happy week!

The second instance is to start using weight bearing, putting weight, on the injured leg.

support, crutch

Thats a tricky one for sure, crutch came to mind as soon as I saw the question, maybe cos I use one!
Note from asker:
For Tony: this chap was actually issued with two underarm crutches:) but these involved no weight bearing.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Tony M : Wouldn't lake sense here: nearer the time of the accident, a crutch as not allowed? Besides, it does mention 'crutches' in the same breath...

disagree B D Finch : He's a patient, not a bridge and that would be a slightly unusual term for a crutch.
