chris collister Aug 10, 2010:
EI EI O Young's modulus (E) and the 2nd moment of area (or area moment of inertia) are frequently expressed together as the bending stiffness, with dimensions of Nm^2. Hence I in this expression is nD^4/645. Compare this with the standard expression for a solid, homogeneous cylindrical rod, which is pi.D^4/64. Here the author has mixed m with mm, and n is some factor which may have been previously defined. "Jonc" here just means "cylindrical rod".
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bending_stiffness and
http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/area-moment-inertia-d_1328... for further enlightenment.
Note that if this is a polymer we are talking about, not only is E complex (in the mathematical sense), but is not constant either, varying rapidly with temperature.
Claire Nolan Aug 10, 2010:
I think it might be similar to this: http://www.modernplastics.com/torlonreg-4203-pai-polyamideim...

And see ''extrusion de jonc polyamide'' here:

Gene Selkov Aug 10, 2010:
Beam? I can't immediately make sense of the formula; is it for axial load or deflection?

I'm cued do think of beams by "inertie geometrique": http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/area-moment-inertia-d_1328...
Bourth (X) Aug 10, 2010:
Not string At least, I hardly think so. Jonc is also said of plastic or other materials used as "piping" in upholstery, or of plastic or metal beading used between automotive panels (in the "old" days), but I can't see it meaning string. What is this stuff used for in relation to your casting plant?
pooja_chic (asker) Aug 10, 2010:
What about string?
pooja_chic (asker) Aug 10, 2010:
one is using jonc plein too
pooja_chic (asker) Aug 10, 2010:
It is referring to that in polyamide

Beware! Jonc can have many meanings, so more context is required.

It can indeed be a circlip as already suggested, but if so, I would add "circular" because most circlips are flat.

However, a jonc can also be a ring, used for sealing, compensating dimensional differences, etc. or a rod.

Here it's a flat rubber ring (presumably placed between the speaker and the panel it is mounted in, to absorb vibration) :
Haut-parleur ...Forme classique, trous ronds, JONC EN CAOUTCHOUC ; laquées noir, fixation par pinces. Grande stabilité dans toutes les dimensions. Métalliques, noires, avec jonc en caoutchouc.
http://www.toutlehautparleur.com/grilles/ronde-et-trous-rond...

Here it's the rubber seal (specially shaped ring) around the window of a van :
JONC CAOUTCHOUC pour rebord de tôle vitres arrières fourgonette vitrée., Jonc caoutchouc en "u" pour rebord de tole fenêtres arrières fourgonette vitrée.
www.comptoir-carrosserie.fr/jonc-caoutchouc-pour-rebord-tol...

Here they are fibre-glass rods, solid or hollow. Now these are TRULY CYLINDRICAL.
Vous l'avez trouvé, vous, l'endroit à Nantes où on trouve des jONCS (tige pleine) de fibre de verre en 1 cm de diamètre ?
Y'a bien un magasin de voile ou de cerfs volants qui en vend ?
http://strat.niceboard.com/l-atelier-d-artisanat-f23/jonc-fi...

Descriptif : JONC fibre de ferre plein de 8 mm de diamètre sur 2 m de long. Produit qui raviera les fabricants d'épées pour les GN. ...

It's even possible that jonc cylindrique could be a non-standard term for joint torique or "O-ring".

More context required. What are your joncs used for, what are they made of, etc.

If it's polyamide and they specify it is solid - which suggests it could otherwise be hollow - I suspect its a rod. Hollow rings are a rare beast, other than for lifesaving purposes, as sweets, and for sufferers of severe haemorrhoids; hollow circlips must be even rarer.
