Syn.
commis de restaurant n.
commis de rang n.

Déf. :
Membre de la brigade de restaurant qui assure la liaison entre la cuisine et la salle à manger.

Note(s) :

Peer comment(s):

agree Peter Bagney : assistant waiter, preferably, though formally commis waiter it is. Actually, for CV, I guess commis waiter is better
6 mins
agree Marney Ogle : I would go with assistant waiter or commis waiter, rather than plain old waiter.

Thank you both!

waiter

plain old garden variety of waiter.

agree MikeGarcia : Also a specialist in gastronomy?WOW!

agree Patrick and Carol Collins : Why bother putting yourself at the bottom of the range in a cv! Waiter is good.

apprentice chef

if in the kitchen;

if on the restaurant floor:
'apprentice waiter'
(R&C)

[but more likely working as a busboy, actually!]
Peer comment(s):

neutral Peter Bagney : commis de salle can't be in the kitchen,,,apprentice waiter OK - busboy hardly for a CV
5 mins
agree Anna Taylor : With both! I know "busboy" isn't great on a CV, but having a friend "commis de salle" in France, it is sadly quite adequate as an actual job description!

trainee waiter

...after Peter Bagney's sensible points; but 'trainee' or 'apprentice' rather than simple 'waiter', which indicates qualification, authority and experience rather than short-term practice.
If it's a modest restaurant, you could get away with 'waiter' on a CV, but if it's a renowned establishment it would be presumptuous.

...or, following Peter Bagney\'s flow again, in his response to Serge,

\'assistant waiter\'

could fit the bill nicely.

busboy

This is the term for someone who is a dog's body to cooks and waiters.
Peer comment(s):

agree Yolanda Broad : Definitely the right term to fit the description posted by Serge L.

Yes, and I even wonder if it isn't in the glossary already. Oh well, as they say, "It is the life!"
