French to English Law/Patents Patents
This is a patent on a footwear sole:

"L'emporte-piece est positionne sur la bande en fonction du nombre de tuyaux necessaires a la longueur du talon. Pour une taille adulte, l'emporte-piece decoupe les 4 tuyaux de diametre superieur et pour une taille enfant, l'emporte-piece ne decoupe que deux ou trois des tuyaux de diametre superieur." thank you
Proposed translations (English)
5 pipe

Discussion

Nathalie Doare Jan 6, 2010:
It is more likely the little pipes that are inserted in the shoe's sole to make them keep a shape. that is what you see at the airport when your shoes gro through the X-ray you can see those little tubes. May be "tube" would be more appropriate then as it is smaller thatwhat you imagine when you say "pipe"
Lori Cirefice Jan 6, 2010:
grooves considering the reference to emporte-pièce, it seems more likely to me that they are cutting some type of grooves in the sole? more context definitely needed to better understand how it all fits together, my understanding could be way off!
Diana Chemparathy (asker) Jan 6, 2010:
This is actually a sole for any type of shoe
Joan Berglund Jan 6, 2010:
what kind of shoe? Is this some kind of cushioning system in an athletic shoe heel? could they be talking about the spring-like thingies that some shoes have in the heel? I still don't know the right word, but maybe someone else will if you describe the shoe type a little more

pipe

in that case "tuyau" is definitely used as the word "pipe"
Note from asker:
I think I'll go with "tube" instead, but thank you anyways
Peer comment(s):

neutral chris collister : I would think "pipe" is unlikely. "Tube" (assuming this to be an elastic, possibly fluid-filled, component of the shoe) is probably a better fit, but further reading of the patent will provide more context.
