This occurs in an explanation of a rose compass. I know that it can mean "perpendicular to" but I don't think that makes sense in this context.
Le compas comprend une rose des vents solidaire de l'aiguille aimantée qui tourne toujours en direction du Nord. Au droit d'un repère fixe (la ligne de foi) qui indique l'avant du navire, nous lisons le cap du navire, c'est-à-dire l'angle entre le Nord magnétique et l'axe longitudinal de l'embarcation.
