My dictionaries don't suggest that, George, but I had indeed wondered if it might be an old deformation of "abreuv�". Apparently not.

you might want to propose that to French to French since maybe the meanig of broyer was somewhat different in 18th century

I suspect the choice of the right word might depend on the allusion being made in the poem, if you have it all. Use of "pétrir" suggests that his portliness is compared to bread (quite why, though, I fail to understand), so "broyer" could well apply to the MILLING of the corn to make the flour to make that bread ... But it could be something else ...
