I've lived in mainland Europe too long. What's this called (standard) in English? And BTW, what do you call the parallel Indian tradition of them? (Not the bindus, but the kinkier ornaments, like sea-horses and the like).

I found this site

This tattoo looks great on the belly button! Green, red, blue, pink, and clear jewels make up this tattoo. Self-adhesive tattoos for temporary use on your body and face. Don't use on sensitive skin.
Self-adhesive is very important to distinguish it from "body piercing jewellery" about which sites abound.

Comment: "Thanks, Paola. And thanks too, Carolyn, but I wasn't referring to Mehandi. Its the fact that Indian ladies have been sticking on similar things for ages without ritual significance (originally the bindu had a message code, but lately you find all sorts of plastic stick-ons)."

A transfer is a non-permanent self-adhesive tattoo popular among kids.
I'm afraid I don't know about the Indian origins.

For the Indian art, are you thinking of mehandi?
