Hello everybody,

The above term is stated in a letter of the German Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt which deals with information to be provided by the Central Card Index for Traffic Offences (Verkehrszentralregister):

"Eintragungen im Verkehrszentralregister und damit auch die Punkte werden nach Ablauf der Tilgungsfrist zuzüglich einer **Überliegefrist** von einem Jahr aus dem Verkehrszentralregister entfernt."

I came across "demurrage", but just in a maritime context. Is it also a suitable translation of "Überliegefrist"?

Ich habe mir Ähnliches schon gedacht und demurrage deswegen sehr infrage gestellt. Danke für den Hinweis.

re maritime demurrage wäre hier definitiv falsch, da ausschließlich im Seehandel in Charterverträgen gebraucht.

seems to fit. There may be other more apporpriate expressions but this one fits the bill IMHO.
Demurrage definitely not.

agree Steffen Walter : Depending on the phrasing, "additional period" might also fit whereas "demurrage" is definitely off the mark here, as you correctly pointed out.

extended listing period

or simply "extended period", to show that the term for listing will expire at a time beyond the time listed on the registry. Extended listing periods are common in the US in DMV and property registries and are a part of the framework of filings under Article 9 (secured transactions, including for motor vehicles). Here I would distinguish "waiting period" which is a period that delays some right vesting, from "extension period" which is a period that extends a right already granted.

agree Hermeneutica : Not just in the US, as concerns mortgages at least also in France, which can cause trouble when unexplained info [not restricted as in Germany] is given to new lenders e.g. ... Don't know, always bought my cars cash ;-) and they don't use mechanics' liens

yes; I assume chattel mortgages too? ~ ah! thank you. / as for mechanics liens: I include all my non-payments as a loss in my annual tax report, include name and address of the non-paying company. I figure the IRS may be interested in patterns.

Ja, ich hatte auf der KBA-Seite mal geschaut, war aber zu keinem befriedigenden Ergebnis gekommen. Immer diese Hektik....
