German term

ohne Stand

German to English Law/Patents Law (general) Police report, including minutes of interrogation
This is one of a suspect's details, along with name, date of birth and address. Obviously, the doc is highly confidential, so I can't give much context. But I can say that, going by the context, it could plausibly mean either "unemployed" or "single". The usual dictionaries and Google research have been unusually unhelpful, so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Discussion

Steffen Walter Jul 11, 2013:
Thank you for your comment That's a perfectly reasonable approach.
James Taylor (X) (asker) Jul 11, 2013:
Thanks :-) and sorry :-( Many thanks to all contributors - I didn't select a most helpful answer because, in the end, I copped out and presented both alternatives (Arbeitsstand and Familienstand) in my translation, whilst adding a note for the client explaining the ambiguity.
James Taylor (X) (asker) Jul 5, 2013:
A little more info... I think (?!) I can add, without breaching confidentiality, that the individual's marital status and job status ARE both known. The individual in question is neither in work nor in a relationship - hence, "ohne Stand" could, in principle, refer to either...:-)
Charlotte Farrell Jul 4, 2013:
I think Familienstand is much more likely
Martina Kilgo Jul 4, 2013:
Ich denke auch, dass man ohne etwas mehr Kontext nicht sagen kann ob der Berufsstand oder der Familienstand gemeint ist. Beides ist moeglich :)
James Taylor (X) (asker) Jul 4, 2013:
The full list is name, address, date and place of birth. Sorry - not many more details to give!
AllegroTrans Jul 4, 2013:
OK but please give us the full list (i.e. name, address, etc.) so that it it's easier to evaluate what this could relate to. You don't need to breach confidentiality to do that.

no marital status specified

"Stand" seems to designate "Personenstand" or "Familienstand", hence my suggestion.

See, for instance, http://www.proz.com/kudoz/english_to_german/certificates_dip...

or "marital status unknown"

Regarding "single", this would be a marital status in its own right already, in which case "ohne Stand" would not make sense.
Peer comment(s):

neutral AllegroTrans : could also refer to "Arbeitstand"?

Yes, perhaps, but I'd consider "Familienstand" slightly more likely. (Just guessing, though, in the absence of further information.)
agree Charlotte Farrell

agree seehand : Familienstand scheint mir auch näherliegend

without employment/of no apparent means

Like Steffan, I am putting a low CL on this.
The problem is that it isn't written against any heading.
