German term

Absaugkamin

German to English Tech/Engineering Medical: Pharmaceuticals DNA Polymerase
"Absaugvorrichtung, Fa. Hölzl, 6 Kamine"

"• Gefällte Proben in die Absaugkamine schütten, Eppendorf-Gefäß dreimal mit 5%iger TCA Lösung ausspülen und Kamin dreimal mit derselben Lösung nachwaschen."

From a text about a DNA polymerase. Absaugkamin is sometimes just referred to as a "Kamin". Either way, I'm totally flummoxed by it. The dictionaries are no help here, and neither is Google. The usual translations of "Kamin" don't make a lot of sense to me here. Anyone here have a clue what this might mean? TIA for any light you can shed on this extremely obscure word.

Discussion

Rowan Morrell (asker) Mar 31, 2008:
Still Have No Idea I used "funnel" in the end, but I have no idea if that's right, and frankly, I'm just as mystified about the term now as I was when I first asked the question. So I don't feel I can give the points to anyone, even the person who suggested "funnel" (because it was a total guess on my part; I didn't have any real confidence in it), and hence I am closing this question without grading it. Thanks anyway for your ideas.

venting cabinet

My guess, but there might be a better English term.

What comes to mind is the cabinet in which our Chemistry teacher would show experiments where gases or vapours would be generated. (One happy memory is him filling up the classroom with chlorine gas and very casually announcing that we now better go out to watch a video in the video room)

disagree Gillian Scheibelein : definately not in this context. What you are refering to is a "fume hood"

fume hood

or chemical fume hood, or laboratory fume hood

I am not sure about these, but these come to mind. Those expressions, of course, are used very frequently in describing "cabinets" which are used either for

storage of fume producing chemicals (concentrated acids, etc)

or conducting experiments where noxious and toxic fumes are expected to be generated.

Work that involves hazards and noxious materials which are toxic, odoriferous, volatile or harmful shall be conducted within a laboratory hood. The primary purpose of a laboratory hood is to keep toxic or irritating vapors and fumes out of the general laboratory working area. A secondary purpose is to serve as a shield between the worker and equipment being used when there is the possibility of an explosive reaction. This is done by lowering the sash of the hood.

Hood ventilation systems are best designed to have an airflow of not less than 60 ft/min (linear) and not more than 120 ft/min (linear) across the face of the hood. Flow rates of higher than 125 ft/min can cause turbulence problems and are not recommended. If possible, a mark will have been placed on the hood so the sash can be drawn to a poin

German term (edited): Absaugkamin --> Köcher

pipette holders

As you mentioned Rowan, this is definately not a fume hood (they aren't washed for a start). I think the text could be referring to a pipette washer made by Hölzl. In which case the "Kamin" would be "Köcher" - their international website refers to them as "holders" I can't give you a weblink, but go to the website below and click on "international" at the top of the page then on "products" and "pipette washers" and "extra holders". They look like a "kamin" (sort of!). This is the only thing that comes to mind and also the only thing that fits on the Hölzl website.

Watch out for Absaugkamin / Kamin, the former probably is refering to a fume hood, i.e. 2 separate things.

I'd also ask the author for clarification of this (IMHO) unusual term.

Good luck!!

disagree Brita Fiess (X) : This is something completely different!

neutral Ken Cox : I'd certainly be inclined to see this as an example of the possibly genetically determined ( ;-) ) tendency of German speakers to name things according to their shape instead of their function
