Liebe KollegInnen,

Orchestra setting
Besetzung is a convenient term meaning the combination of voices and/or instruments used to perform a composition, and for which there is no equivalent English word, although ‘setting’ or ‘scoring’ is similar. (Grove Music Dictionary)

play with a full complement / a reduced number of players
is what Muret-Sanders proposes for "in großer oder voller / kleiner Besetzung spielen"

"a full complement of players" would seem to fit your context, as "full orchestra" denotes a complete orchestra of over 100 players

orchestra size
I'd think along this line for the heading (I think you've more or less cracked the second occurrence) - although it doesn't make a particularly exciting title :-)
I'd also consider not even using the word orchestra, as in English terms a sextet isn't big enough to be called an orchestra - it's a group/band/ensemble. So possibly ensemble size?
Orchestration to my mind is more about the make-up of the orchestra in terms of specific instruments, not about overall size which is what you need.

Stephen Sadie
: i like this either "leave orchestra/ensemble size" or simply "ensemble size"

: Yes - conservative Viennese clients probably prefer "ensemble" to band or group. "Orchestration" is definitely the wrong word in this context.

writeaway
: with Brigitte-orchestration usually refers to the musical arrangement (which instruments play what, for example) and not the size or make up of the orchestra itself. that would be the composition of the orchestra.

for God's sake - it is a quotation - I didn't write it!n But I realise that this wasn't the quotation I meant to select because consist is a verb here

: actually, in UK usage this occurs often -- treating a singular noun referring to a group of people as a plural noun, and accordingly using a plural verb. It is particularly common in reference to musical ensembles. (But it's definitely wrong in Georgia!)

although "orchestra size" is fine here, I think this is another possibility

In this case you don't necessarily have to worry about the translation of the heading being literal, it seems to me. Since this is a note alerting the reader to expect a smaller ensemble at certain times, it might make sense to have that be the sense of the heading. Just another possibility.
'Orchestration' is definitely incorrect.
