impronta

Italian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
I need a translation for this "apparently simple" word. It's part of a title in a book (Chapter 1). The title is: "L'impronta del libro". I was thinking of "mark", "scope" but I'm sure there's a better word. Any ideas?

Discussion

Robert Mongiello (asker) Jan 8, 2012:
By "impronta" I think the author is referring to the way the book is "organized". Here's how the section begins: "L'impostazione che abbiamo cercato di dare a questo libro vuole rendere omaggio all'opera di un preparatore, divenuto artigiano, ed infine costruttore di auto da corsa, nella Firenze dell'immediato dopoguerra, e che fra grandi carenze infrastrutturali e ristrettezze economiche seppe competere ad armi pari con le più importanti case costruttrici dell'epoca."
James (Jim) Davis Jan 8, 2012:
Does the chapter ? Does the chapter give the layout of the rest of the book? Does it explain what led the author to write it? What does the chapter do? One way to translate a title is to read the chapter without reading the title and to think of a title for the chapter in English, with no reference to the title in the source text.

Context please "L'impronta del libro"....cosa?
Robert Mongiello (asker) Jan 8, 2012:
The book is about motor racing, vintage sports cars. It's the title of the first section of the book.
James (Jim) Davis Jan 8, 2012:
Is it a novel? What is the book about? What is the chapter about? Is it an introduction?

approach/perspective

"The book's approach" or "perspective" are two options that are conmmonly used for this notion.

non si può dire con certezza dal titolo solo. Bisogna sapere di che si tratta il libro.

thanks Susy. It may also be a layout. Or even aim, partendo dall'orrenda espressione "questo libro è improntato a..." :)

Given the lack of other context, I think this MAY be what is meant.

Vista la spiegazione che dai nella discussion, mi sembra di aver capito che si parla, appunto, del contributo apportato dal libro nel descrivere la vita e la carriera del protagonista del libro stesso.

aim

On the basis of reading the first few lines of the chapter: "The aim of the book"

It the rest of the chapter does in fact describe how the book is organised, then "layout" might be appropriate.

imprint

missing the context I cannot be sure how exactly 'impronta' is intended, but if I got it, I believe you should use a word such as 'imprint'
