I would agree with Sheryle that the word "mean" could be used as an alternative, if you specify which "mean" is meant. With nothing to indicate the contrary, I assume the term above refers to the "arithmetic average".
"In statistics, mean has two related meanings:
the arithmetic mean (and is distinguished from the geometric mean or harmonic mean).
the expected value of a random variable, which is also called the population mean."
"The mean may often be confused with the median, mode or range. The mean is the arithmetic average of a set of values.."

Statistical language is required. As an example of the expression suggested, ...world population distribution is uneven. Some areas have a high population density while others have a low population density.
Over the years the gini index for wealth has been greater then that of income. Hence, wealth is more unevenly distributed in the US.
The optimal values of the variables for clones EET 397 and TSH 565 were more unevenly distributed around the mean than those for the other clones.
In comparison/relation to those for the other clones, the optimal values of the variables for (clones) EET 397 and TSH 565 were more unevenly distributed.

Thanks, Nick, and agree with the /less evenly/, though both forms are acceptable.
