I wonder, would it be appropriate to translate it word for word? Or is there a set expression to convey the meaning?

I would love to know the whole context. Without it, this may be your best bet for a literal translation.

(...) made him allergic to lies
Мне нравится трактовка Михаила, но на всякий случай приведу еще один вариант прочтения: (...) and this incident made him allergic to lies (for the rest of his life). Т.е.
