I\'ve made a web search, and actually Canton seems to be the more frequent, though a fewest \"village\" and \"cantonment\" are also used

In Switzerland, the 25 cantons are mini-states. In France, on the other hand, a canton is a (smaller) unit within a so-called "département".
IN every case, it is a political delineation.
