Spanish term

amarres

Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature Testimonial
Este último, en indagatoria como cómplice en los amarres del ex alcalde, entró
en sendas contradicciones, aunque siempre pretendió cubrirle la espalda a su jefe.

NOTE: I understand that "amarres' in this context means 'the sharing of the take' I how just don't know how to say that in English.

Discussion

Angel Biojo (asker) Apr 4, 2013:
amarres Thank you David, as I said what I understand by 'amarres' in this context is 'giving a piece of the pie to all the parties involved' (in looting government money.) In other words, leaving no loose ends.
José J. Martínez Apr 4, 2013:
Collusion?

shady deals/goings on/entanglements

Entanglements meaning "enredos", in Spanish.

This is how I see it Angel, as the former Mayor's "strange" or "shady" matters.

if it means "taking a share" as you say
Peer comment(s):

neutral Yvonne Gallagher : I think rephrasing and using as a verb would work= creaming off

backhanders

from your explanation, this is what it sounds lik: a surreptitious payment to obtain goods or services (or permits and permissions!) that otherwise wouldn't be obtainable. The Alcalde of Marbella was notorious for receiving backhanders for allowing illegal building on protected sites, and ended up in gaol, along with most of her councillors

affairs

Things that were linked or attached to the Ex Alcalde. Words in english that also indicate the meaning behind this use of "amarres" are "links" "attachements" possibly, "threads" as "threads" are used on the Internet today.

It indicates that the Alcade was involved, cognizant and somehow can be traced back to these things.

I would not translate it literally in this case.
