Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Yvonne Gallagher

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Timothy Barton Aug 10, 2015:
Test You just said that the translation is for university work. You should mark it as such so that people know. There's an option to do so when you submit your question.
sebaspedlp (asker) Aug 9, 2015:
Thank you all! I wrote \"es\" because this translation is for a project we have to do as students. It is not about a nowadays test. Thank you again for your time.
Darius Saczuk Aug 9, 2015:
Like the FIFA Confederations Cup, for instance, in which 8 teams participate. By the way, the asker wrote, \"es\", which makes things a little confusing.
Timothy Barton Aug 8, 2015:
I stand corrected You\'re right. I was thinking of the new style, multiple-team championship.
Darius Saczuk Aug 8, 2015:
History The Intercontinental Cup (known as Toyota Cup 1980–2004) was an annual contest held between 1960 and 2004 and played between the previous season\'s UEFA Champions League and Copa Libertadores winners. From 1960 to 1979, the cup was played over two legs. Between 1960 and 1968, the cup was decided on points, which meant that a third play-off match was played when both teams were equal on points. From 1969 to 1979, the competition adopted the aggregate score method, with away goals. In 1980, the Toyota Motor Corporation assumed sponsorship of the contest, renaming it Toyota Cup and transforming it into a single-match contest, held at a neutral venue in Japan. From 1980 to 2001, the match was held at the National Olympic Stadium in Tokyo, and the last three - from 2002 to 2004 - were held at the International Stadium in Yokohama. The competition was then discontinued and merged into the FIFA Club World Cup, which was held for the first time in 2000.

competition

I wouldn't translate "deportiva" here. In English we'd just say competition.

You asked whether it would be "competitive sport". If you think "competitive sport" translates "competición deportiva" I would recommend you stop translating. This is a basic error I wouldn't expect an A-level student to make. I hope you don't feel offended. If you really want to be a translator, get some language training first.

Thank you for your help and explanation. I'm still studying to be a Translator, I'm in the second year (out of five) This is a translation we have to do for the subject Translation 2: foreign language. Thank you again for your help

agree Neil Ashby : The ... Cup WAS a competition organised by FIFA and included in the official calendar. The Intercontinental Cup no longer exists so not sure why the source uses "es".

sporting competition

If you prefer a British English alternative to "sports" (which has a more American feel).

Incidentally, the Intercontinental Cup doesn't exist anymore (it was replaced by the FIFA Club World Cup), but I'm sure you've worked that out by now.

a Competitive tournament

Peer comment(s):

disagree Timothy Barton : No need for the capped C. The meaning is wrong too. A \"competitive tournament\" implies a tournament in which teams are evenly matched, which is not the meaning here.
