I know it may hurt your feelings when you hear that translation of 龙 (the Chinese dragon) as Loong essentially got a death sentence according to the Standards and Norms for Chinese-English Translation of Key Terms in China’s Current Affairs, which says that it is no longer necessary to translate 龙 (the Chinese dragon) and a lot of dragon-related Chinese terms by using phonetic alphabets (拼音). However, that is reality we have to face. That means if you insist on translating 龙 as Loong, your translation may not be accepted. Your articles and books may not get published unless you change the word “loong” to “Chinese dragon” or simply “dragon”.

The writing of loong and foong-shooy is called phonetic transcription, 也就是用符号（拼音字母、注音符号，或国际音标等）来标示语音. The translation of loong is dragon (as it is commonly translated). The translation of Foong-Shooy is Wind-water superstition. 在那时，如果沃克不翻译的话，外国人看见 loong 和 foong-shooy 会一头雾水。

没错，作者怕读者看了 loong 之后一头雾水，才写了这句注释，但他的意思并不是“过去都译为 dragon，现在我译为 loong 了”。
In order for English readers to understand what the loong is, the authors added the clarification “or dragon, as it is commonly translated”. The authors were telling the English readers: the loong is commonly translated as dragon.
The same pattern could be used for foong-shooy: “Foong-shooy or wind-water superstition, as it is commonly translated”, which tells the English readers that foong-shooy is commonly translated as wind-water superstition.

Loong and foong-shooy 这类书写方式就是用拼音或注音符号来标出“龙”和“风水”的发音。由于各地的方言不同，有些人会用 lung 来标出龙的发音。这并非是“闹乌龙”。如果台湾人用 ㄉㄚˋ ㄕㄨㄟˇ ㄔㄨㄙ ㄌㄜ ㄌㄨㄙˊ ㄨㄤˊ ㄇㄧㄠˋ 来表示“大水沖了龍王廟”，外国人看了更是一头雾水！不过应该说，许多台湾人的国语说得非常标准！
《中国时政话语翻译基本规范．英文》（外文出版社，2023年1月第一版）指出：“这些都表明东方龙的正面形象在西方已经逐步确立，因此没有必要再用拼音或其他方式来重译“龙”及与之相关的大量中国文化词语。” 也就是说，没有必要再用 loong 或其他方式来重译“龙”及与之相关的大量中国文化词语。众所周知，与龙相关的大量中国文化词语包括但不限于：龙舟、舞龙、龙王庙等等。换言之，用 loong 来重译“龙”这种方式应该废除。如果说"实际上，这一结论判处了 loong 的死刑"，那太伤人感情，毕竟你为“译龙为 loong”的大业努力奋斗了20年，没有功劳也有苦劳。
