I think this is more the meaning here. To have a shot at something is to 'try your luck at something', to try something to see if works.

Estoy completamente de acuerdo con lo que dice Juan Pablo. Se tendrá que ver cual es el contexto - si es que él hizo los esfuerzos, o si alguien le dió una oportunidad gratuita. En inglés hay dos opciones:
eg. He decided to go to LA to have a shot at the big time (probar suerte)
or:
They gave him just one shot at the big time (oportunidad)
