The Oxford says both "EXTRAÑO E INQUIETANTE" ; the text intends to say that it is disquieting that they would flock around Krashen like a guru, regardless of what he did or didn't do, I'm just trying to translate what the writer intended to convey.

eerie o eery tiene cierta cualidad de tenebroso, funesto; se usa generalmente al hablar de historias de espantos. Pero también se puede usar para hablar de algo extraño que causa miedo o alguna sensación negativa. Así que "eerie" en inglés funciona tanto en un contexto de Halloween o cementerio a media noche como de manera más metafórica en otros ámbitos.
El problema es que si en español usamos una de las palabras que mantiene el sentido de miedo, suena extraño: como que no funciona muy bien usar el sentido figurado de algo que causa ese tipo de miedo dentro de un contexto que no sea fúnebre...
En este contexto, creo que "perturbador" funciona: mantiene la sensación de algo que impresiona de manera que da miedo, sin remitir a una sensación de que lo que te asusta es Frankenstein...
