French term or phrase:prix d'ami (alternative to mates rates)
un prix d'ami - I'm looking for something which sounds less modern... mates rates smacks of 80s/90/00s to me tho I may be wrong, I am looking for sth more 1950s in spirit... this is referring to paying someone's salary, not a sale of an object
thanks to everyone, they could all be used in different situations I think, since this is paying a salary I think it works best... otherwise my dad confirms that no one said mates rates back in the 50s! 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer
Checking with yur dad is probably not a bad option. For AE, I was thinking along the lines of giving someone a break (that soumnds too modern too). Remember, it was just after the war, so the perspective was a little different .
British English, primarily yes, tho the person in question has travelled in the States so I would be interested to hear any US expressions... it's more a question of the time, I cna't see someone in the 50s saying "mates rates", tho I should probably check with my dad!
interesting, I see what you mean, but really in this sense it means paying someone at a lower rate because you are friends or doing them a favour... at reduced rate.. giving someone a good price as it were... rates mates is a perfect translation, but I fear too modern, still food for thought, thanks
