orange stick
I have no idea why it's called this.
Here it's called an "orangewood stick": http://www.lindarose.com/art-manicure.asp
http://www.nailsalonsonline.com/tips.htm "You need is a good cuticle remover to soften the cuticle and an orange stick. After you apply it the cuticle remover, gently push back cuticles with the orange stick. Then move the orange stick in tiny circles around the base of the nail to help remove the dead skin and debris that may be there."

Further research turned up the fact that not all cuticle pushers are oange sticks. So Michael\'s answer is more appropriate if you don\'t know what it\'s made of.
http://yestheyrefake.net/nailcare.html \"Orange Stick: Named appropriately for being made out of the wood of orange trees. Very creative. Why necessarily made from orange tree wood? I have no clue -- it just is. You can also use a plastic \"cuticle pusher\" but for individuals with sensitive cuticles -- use an orange stick. You should never use a metal cuticle pusher as this can severely damage the cuticle and nail bed. A cuticle pusher is also used for cleaning underneath the nail.\"
