| Report from Oliver Walter | | About 15 people came to this powwow. I arrived late and those who were already there were talking about last week's Language Show at Earls Court. We spent some time talking about the Language Show and the Proz virtual conference of 30 September. We generally agreed that the Language Show was mainly for teachers and learners of languages, with only a small number of show stands to interest translators and interpreters. Experiences of the virtual conference were also a little mixed, with some good content, some not so good, and some problems with navigation to the different conference areas. Our conversation also drifted onto other related matters such as TM tools - those mentioned included Trados, SDLX, Wordfast, MemoQ, OmegaT. The venue, which the London powwows have used since November 2009, is still a good place to meet, although on this occasion the room became rather cold. The main bar area downstairs was heated and the barman told me there was some problem with the heating upstairs. They had better solve the problem soon, before Winter comes! |

Dear colleagues,
I\'m sorry I couldn\'t attend the PW last month, but I was snowed under with work. I went, however, to the Language Show, and as I didn\'t intend to book a Spanish course in Acapulco, I rather investigated the opportunities for translators to work for the European Union - I had a longer conversation with two of their recruiters, and although they usually look for trilingualists, they also regularly employ agencies and were very interested in the idea of collaborating with a reputable network of people like... us... as I think that the old and established translators have enough to do with their regulars, it could be worthwhile to see if the young translators, who at our penultimate meeting somehow wondered how to get into the market altogether, were interested in a joint bid, maybe with the assistance of the experienced people. Just an idea... feel free to tell me off or comment on it. I would also be happy to give more details on the next powwow

I\'m sorry to have missed this powwow, my workload got the better of me last week.
With regards to future powwows: My November and December schedule are very much up in the air, so I won\'t be able to organise another one before the end of this year.
If Oliver (or of course anyone else who feels inclined) would like to take over until then I would be most grateful.
Otherwise see you in 2011!

Dear colleagues,
I regret that I could not attend the powwow: I was 2 blocks away from the venue when I had to leave immediately.
I share Oliver\'s opinion on the two events in question, so I won\'t repeat it in my own comments here (I\'ve already sent them to Proz staff shortly after the conference). I would also like to mention that I availed myself of the group buy feature and purchased Trados on the day of the conference.
