What is the configuration of your computer? Is it adequate to handle your translation work?
Mine:
CPU: P4 1.8A OC 2.4
Memory: 256M DDR400
HD: WD80GJB
Motherboard: GA845GV
Monitor: 15" LCD
Sometimes, I still find my computer slow in handling large files (for example, once I had a MS-word file 60M in size.)

I have been using my main workstation for 2-3 years now - no need to change it:
Intel Xeon 1.7GHz
1 GB RAM
(The harddisk is irrelevant, as all data is stored on the server.)
Two 18" LCD displays
I hardly run into any speed problems - presumably thanks to the extensive RAM (I usually run MS Outlook XP in parallel with Trados, Word, sometimes Excel and MSIE).

What I find particularly beneficial is the dual display - if you use a "dual head" graphics card, you can display both screens as a single desktop, giving you a 2,536 x 1,024 resolution.

My work Windows computer, the one I use for translations, is a PII400/256 MB RAM with a 17" monitor at 1152 x 864. It's way below state of the art but does the job quite adequately.
Planned upgrades include a faster processor (PIII 800) and a larger monitor.
I keep deeply paranoid backups of everything in a server.

Intel Celeron Processor (didn't see the point in paying extra for Pentium)

All back-ups are stored on CD-ROM

I bought this configuration in 2002 and bought an extra wafer of RAM last year mainly to drum up some costs in December I haven't noticed much difference between 256 and 512 MB (except in my head, maybe).
My next upgrade (this December) will be a new processor and probably a DVD burner.
The biggest file I ever worked with was a 69 MB Word file about 70 pages long, but full of embedded pictures that somebody forgot to res down. The computer didn't even work up a sweat.
The LG monitor is wonderful, no matter what anyone says about LCD's. I experience no eye fatigue even after 10 hours. I have 1280x960 resolution at 85 Hz refresh rate.
p.s. I have had pentium processors since 1988 or so, but my computer magician friend offered me a reallllly good deal on the AMD. I haven't noticed anything adverse in its work.

PII-600MHz, 256M RAM, HDD 10G, 15" CRT moitor, working resolution 1024x768. I use it with a 600 VA UPS.
It is somewhat slow with TRADOS, but quite fast with MS Word.
2) Laptop purchased in 2000:
PIII-700MHz, RAM 64M, HDD 6G, LCD resolution 1024x768.
3) Very ancient laptop:
PI-160MHz, RAM 32M, HDD 2G, LCD res.800x600.

Last month I had to edit a 170 pages (text only, no pictures) MS WORD file using my 'very anvient' laptop. Oh yes, it was annoying, but I had no choice. And you know - it worked!
And here is what I use at work:
1) Desktop purchased in 1999:
PII-350MHz, 128M RAM, HDD 3G, 17" CRT monitor, working resolution 1024x768.
2) Desktop purchased in 2002:
P4-1.7G, RAM 512M, HDD 60G, 17" CRT monitor, working resolution 1280x960.
So I have a lot of experience with various computers. And not only for translation, but for many IT-related tasks too. And when somebody says that P4-1.8GHz with 256M RAM is not fast enough for manual translation, I simply do not believe it.
It is more likely that your computer is not properly configured. Modern operating systems from MS eat up a lot of system resources. Whatever power computers achieve, MS invariably offers a new "improved" operating system that eats up all the system power and resources without doing anything better than it did 10 years ago.
So you may have a good IT guy check what processes are running in your system and disable those you do not need. ▲ Collapse

Controlled by Windows XP and running very smoothly.

Only laptops here, that is because we haul them around with us.
both are OK for translation work - nobody yet mentioned the keyboard. My Laptop is a Spanish Airis, not too well assembled, but the keyboard is great!!

I am a typical end user, I buy out of the box - although I will remember the things that were said about hardware in a previous thread, if ever I need another one.
Both machines are more than sufficient to do translation work. The Pentium IV is a bit noisy (the fan), but became a bit less noisy after they found out that in the factory they had not added any heat-dissipating paste so the unit was overheating. I was so glad I brought the computer in because it had a virus!! ▲ Collapse
