pueden ser mejoradas
Si bien ya alguien dijo "ser mejoradas", yo usaría "pueden" porque es lo que implica el texto. No señala obligatoriedad, sino más bien conveniencia.

no creo que sea "resistencia al cambio".
upgrade es siempre elevar el nivel, enriquecer, subir, mejorar, ascender. No me gusta actualizar porque es muy informático y equivale a "ponerse al día".
Además el diccionario no lo arroja como equivalente a actualizar propiamente tal.
Aquí yo creo que el sentido es hacerlo mejor, aprender nuevas técnicas, argumentos, etc.
