This word can be translated in many ways such as the ones already provided. I think thoracic compression or respiratory asphyxia due to thoracic compression are nice and clear.

Is this an accident of accidental burial by sand or other things? Because usually, if something big and heavy fell on top, you are not as likely to die from compression (you would die from the impact which would fracture the chest).

Compressive respiratory insufficiency is just another term, but it is good because it combines two things: the fact that there was compression, and the fact that there was lack of air due to it. Basically, it is when the weight of the substance pressing on the chest is too heavy and it doesn't allow the chest to expand.

hmm...based on your recent description of being crushed, it could be just a "chest trauma", which indicates that the force on the chest was sudden. But since the Japanese term specifies compression, I think it would be a little risky to use chest trauma. It depends if the direct cause of death is due to the impact or to the lack of oxygen I guess...
