This is a film critic talking about Luis Bunuel's film that begins with the eye being cut. Here below the word in context....
I am fine with the rest and I know that this term means "of cinema itself" like metateatro means "theatre that portrays theatre". But is there an equivalent of this parolone in English?

"E poi, nel prologo, si realizza un gesto di particolare violenza, il taglio dell'occhio con un rasoio. Il segmento è stato interpretato in vari modi. È di certo opportuna una lettura metacinematografica."

a metacinematic reading

"Metacinema" exists in English.

It means elements of cinema that cause the viewer to think outside the film, to the way the film is made, or the director's/ screenwriters considerations, and the like.

The "-ographic" is possible in English, but unnecessary, as the "meta" itself implies criticism or interpretation "-graphia"
