French term
sur le mode du décalage

Hi
This is from a text on the ways Walt Disney has influenced other artists (includng today).
The point in this paragraph is that contemporary artists often parody Disney in their work:
"La citation se fait souvent sur le mode du décalage."
"Parody" is one solution but I'd like to avoid it if possible as the French doesn't refer specifically to "parodie."
Many thanks!

bricolage / pastiche
I think this is the typical post-modern quoting - so I think this means displacement or shifting of elements from Disney into new contexts. It is almost a collage-like effect.
I think I would slightly rewrite the sentence, or use the term, borrowed from French, that is used for the practice in art, bricolage. Pastiche is another possibility.

Thanks for the points, Sandra - yes, displacement would be a good solution in itself.

Comment: "Thank you Helen and everyone for such strong suggestions. There were many possibilities here and of them all, I think Helen's suggestion of "displacement" in the comments to her answer is best suited to my text. Thanks again."

I actually like the sound of "offbeat parody", unless you really want to avoid the use of the word.

I don't know how you could work it into your text (depends on the other sentences), but it sounds like artists are taking Disney themes and giving them a new twist, so something like "Disney with an offbeat twist" might work...
Just brainstorming - hope this helps a bit!

out of context
This is a fairly literal option. Perhaps something along the lines of:
References often involve using (elements, characters...) out of context.
Out of sync might also be useful.

takes the form of a reinterpretation
Would fit if décalage is meant in a temporal sense - or is it more tenuous, an "indirect reference".

"doing a different/fun take"
Not sure how you could use it but the expression of " doing a/n (adj.) take on Disney" could fit
3 hrs
out of kilter with the original
"out-of-kilter" is also used as an adjective.

contradiction
Or conflict. These artists are quoting in order to contract, to express conflct with the original image. This would go beyond parody.
