English term

paraaortic

English Medical Medical (general)
Hi everyone!

I am proofreading a medical report [high-quality, but written by a German native] and it mentions "paraaortAL lymph nodes". Now, as far as I know, the expression in English is "paraaortIC".

However, I am reluctant to correct anything unless I am CERTAIN ( and thus I wanted to check with you) because it is for a high-profile physician.

Thanks, everyone, for this interesting discussion. It's been fun!

Re: Both are correct I agree with Rosa. Please see my answer below, where I entered as an example four English/English sources which all give both "aortal" and "aortic" as being correct. Yes, the English "aortic/aortal" is in German "aortal", but this does not change it that in English both forms appear to be correct. If this is true then this should also apply when "aortic/aortal" is combined with the prefix "para-" (as in paraaortic/paraaortal). However, it also seems to be the case that "aortic" and "paraaortic" are more frequently used.
Ellen Kraus Oct 3, 2009:
when combined with the syllable "para", the correct English translation is paraaortic or para-aortic; paraaortal is the German equivalent. Opposed to this is the adjective aortal (e.g. aortal valve), but that is not needed in the present context.
Rosa Paredes Oct 3, 2009:
both are correct Aortal: Pertaining to the aorta, the largest artery in the body.

Aortal is not often encountered (except in The New York Times crossword). The preferred term is aortic.

paraaortic/paraaortal

Both paraaortic and paraaortal seem to be correct.

The Chambers Dictionary gives:

... adj. aortal or aortic

Dorland's Medical Dictionary gives:

aortal - aortic
aortic - of or pertaining to the aorta.

aortal a·or'tal or a·or'tic adj.

a·ortal, a·ortic adj.

However, on googling you get:
4300 hits for paraaortal and
45500 hits for paraaortic

And there are -
5030 hits for paraaortal lymph nodes and
280000 hits for paraaortal lymph nodes

When looking at the lower number of hits, i.e. "paraaortal", it appears that they are mostly entries of non-native English speakers.

Sorry, it should of course read:
"280000 hits for paraaortic lymph nodes."

Confirmed when considerung *relevant* websites

See eg. these two references:

It is critical to search for the exact term "para-aortal lymph nodes" or "para-aortic lymph nodes" - each combined with site:.edu; then the results is clear, also when removing the hyphens.

Sorry, typo: consider*i*ng!

So my point is: *only* paraaortic or para-aortic are correct.
