Russian term or phrase: учредительный характер конституции
Good day everybody.

Here is a couple of quotes from a paper on the Constitution of Russian Federation: "Учредительная природа конституции проявляется в том, что ее предписания первичны, выступают в качестве первоосновы."; "Учредительный первичный характер конституции. Это подразумевает, что вся правовая система РФ строится на основе существующих конституционных норм."

I'd like to know the conventional term for the "учредительный характер" in English. Thanks in advance.

constituent/fundamental nature of the Constitution

Explanation:
as for me, *nature* sounds more "naturally" in this sense :)

Empire had something to do with the US, in particular the constituent nature of the US constitution, but Hardt and Negri were emphatic that it was not reducible to US interests and it would be a mistake to believe that power was centralized in the US (or anywhere). http://www.amazon.com/The-Constitution-Imperium-Ronnie-Lipsc...

P.S. "Учредительные документы" are usually translated as "constituent document"

Well, what can I tell you..

I'm sure you'll understand that others will keep disagreeing and claiming that their answer is the right one just because...

At the same time I'm biased too, but what I shared here comes from experience, from hearing it used by native speakers on multiple occasions and also from using it myself, albeit in a slightly different context...

You will never get fewer opinions than peoples you ask, so ultimatel, the choice is yours as to whom to trust...

Asker: To be frank, I've used this one in my translation; was a bit unsure though, and decided to ask here.
