French term

supports financiers

French to English Bus/Financial Insurance
The document is an explanation of new life insurance regulations in Luxembourg.

I don't think this means "financial support" in this context - more like "financial instrument/products". Any thoughts?

All advice gratefully received.

Many thanks,

George

Discussion

George Young (asker) Apr 30, 2013:
Further investigation in this document has thrown up:

as well as:

I wonder if this is actually a synonym for "fund"?
John ANTHONY Apr 29, 2013:
You may be right about "...financial products...". However, could it mean "financial backups" in the sense that, like it is the case in France, insurance companies must have huge assets to backup their commitments (for many years, the UAP was one of the largest real estate owners in the country, and had a permanent team of 20+ architects looking after the properties. FOOD FOR THOUGHT ? :-)

financial products/investment vehicles

'Products' includes 'instruments', so no need for both. The typical 'support' for insurance company investment is what we would call a fund or subfund, and a company described as 'multi-support' will use a diversified selection of funds.

In this context, though, some of the things the French term would cover are rather more elaborate than mere 'products'. For example, if you wouldn't describe the entire set of tranches of a collateralised debt obligation as a 'product' in itself, you might do better with the less specific 'investment vehicle'.

my suggestion based on what you said, the question text, especially:
and are exposed to risk.

Maybe it's some sort of financial product, but related to investments.

disagree Cetacea : This as nothing to do with financial support in this context, as the asker points out.
