stampa del Palio

Non-PRO Italian to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters
...come il dono ai presenti della stampa del Palio raffigurante la Madonna avvolta in un velo dorato ...

I am confused about what the "stampa del Palio" is. I know that there's a horserace in Siena (which is where the meeting was held) with this name, but what exactly the people were given is not clear to me.
Anyone know this cultural reference?
Thanks you!

I do know what stampa means, but I don't see how one can have a "stampa" (printed material of some kind) of a sporting event. Hence my question for some interpretation outside the actual words. I think the source text is somewhat of a shortcut but I unfortunately cannot get to the author.

stampa = some kind of print I don't have an Italian - English dictionary at home and I am too lazy to search for one on the www (after all, I don't need it) but I'm pretty sure that in this context "stampa" is not a printing press but some printed matter.

Nor do I. But if you're not sure what "stampa" means, have you looked it up? It's a very basic word.
CMarc (asker) Dec 16, 2014:
Brigitte. I don't see how your link tells me what the people where given, which was my question.
BrigitteHilgner Dec 16, 2014:
If I manage to find an answer ... by using google, why can't you?

Italian term (edited): ai presenti della stampa del Palio
Selected

a Palio (banner) to the members of the press present of

Context of just a dozen words of the actual Italian is scarce hence the low confidence. However, "i presenti della stampa" must be the members of the press (journalists) who were present. The Palio is the banner or standard awarded like a medal to the winner of the horse race. You need the Italian "Palio" for the reference to the horse race and also "banner" to let the reader know what was actually given. This is probably a print on silk anyway.
Other interpretations would be that they gave everybody there a print of the Palio of some sort which could be anything from a simple poster to an etching, which I feel unlikely: the Italian would have to read "una stampa del Palio".

print, etching

though they are two different techniques, but with similar reproduction results: a copy of an image

agree philgoddard : Not etching.

tks. I know etching is more "acquaforte" not a "stampa", but I meant "something to be hung on the wall" vs "something to be read in a printed form"!
