English term

earth connection

Non-PRO English to French Tech/Engineering Energy / Power Generation Elec
When attaching an earth bond, the earth connection should be made first before connecting to the equipment. Similarly when removing an earth bond, the connection should be removed from the equipment before disconnecting the earth connection.
Change log

May 8, 2015 13:10: B D Finch changed "Level" from "PRO" to "Non-PRO"

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

PRO (2): Jennifer Levey, Daryo

Non-PRO (3): GILLES MEUNIER, mchd, B D Finch

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

Discussion

Jennifer Levey May 8, 2015:
@Johannes As I commented earlier, this is first and foremost about understanding the English ST in context - and only then attempting to express it correctly in 'proper' French.

Several decades ago, I was certified to work on EHV systems in the UK, so I know a thing or two about earthing systems and procedures (and the absolute importance of getting the translation 'right'). And, whilst I readily accept that my French may no longer be of 'native' level, I venture to suggest that the ambiguous translations into French given in your answer are based on an incorrect interpretation of the English.

In any event, your answer, as posted does not, by any stretch of the imagination, equate to what you just wrote here in the discussion box: "Connect first the bond to earth, then to the equipment." That's what I was explaining in my answers and notes, but it's not what you were suggesting yourself.
Johannes Gleim May 8, 2015:
Misunderstanding Robin's remark about me "Note that, contrary to Johannes’ answer, there is no mention in the ST of “connecting the equipment to (something)”; if it said that, most readers would assume it referred to the connection to the equipment power supply, but that is not what the ST says or means. What it actually says (and means) is: “connecting (the earth bond) to the equipment” shows that my trial to parse the phrase correctly and to help the asker with the translation was misunderstood. I was factory inspector and know the work sequences as described in the context: Connect first the bond to earth, then to the equipment! It's totally identical to that what Robin describes in his proposal. We are not talking about power supply or it's connection.

Peer comment(s):

neutral Jennifer Levey : That is a translation of "earth bond", not "earth connection" in the sense it is used in Asker's ST.

Note that the ST refers to two very specific points in the earthing circuit, corresponding to the 'equipment' end of the earthing bond, and the 'earth' end of that bond.

The translation MUST make that distinction - otherwise, it will be ambiguous, meaningless - and potentially dangerous.

When attaching an earth bond, the earth connection should be made first before connecting to the equipment.
--> qqchose comme:

Just to clarify the reasoning behind the ST, and the importance of getting the translation ‘right’:

The idea is that while someone is manipulating the earth bond it must always be tied to earth potential, not to the potential of the ‘earth’ connection of the equipment, which could be a lot higher (and may even be lethally higher if the equipment is faulty).

Incorrect and misleading answers continue to appear, so let me explain again:

ST, as quoted:
When attaching an earth bond, the earth connection should be made first before connecting to the equipment.

What ST means:
When attaching an earth bond*, the 'earthy' end of this bond must be connected to the earth connection BEFORE the other end of the bond is connected to the earth/ground connection point on the equipment.

* “bond” is a removable section of the complete earth circuit from the equipment frame/enclosure to the Earth. We cannot be explicit about what this ‘bond’ is – it might be a flat metal strip, a thick wire, a solid/rigid copper rod or tube. It might simply be a short plate of brass between two adjacent screw terminals, which is opened/closed (rather like a switch) using a spanner (where there’s a need to break the earth connection to allow the earth resistance to be measured, for example). Generically, ‘liaison’ is a fair translation of ‘bond’ in this context, since the bond is, in fact, a 'link'.

Note that, contrary to Johannes’ answer, there is no mention in the ST of “connecting the equipment to (something)”; if it said that, most readers would assume it referred to the connection to the equipment power supply, but that is not what the ST says or means. What it actually says (and means) is: “connecting (the earth bond) to the equipment”.
Peer comment(s):

agree Daryo : "doit être connectée avant de ..." here "connection" in "earth connection" is the action of connecting, NOT the pieces of metal/the hardware at the end of the cable
19 mins
agree Johannes Gleim : You are right to emphasize the sequence of work, but the term “earth bond” needs a different translation. What’s your idea?

Low impedance at the signal frequency of the electrode-to-earth connection determines its quality, and that quality is improved by increasing the surface area of the electrode in contact with the earth, increasing the depth to which it is driven, using several connected ground rods, increasing the moisture content of the soil, improving the conductive mineral content of the soil, and increasing the land area covered by the ground system.

c'est-à-dire l'ensemble du ou des conducteurs enterrés et interconnectés entre eux et qui sont donc au potentiel du sol (la terre électrique) ;
en général une lamelle conductrice dévissable qui assure la connexion entre la prise de terre et le reste de l'installation ;
qui désigne le câble de protection en lui-même (connecté au bornier de terre) et qui parcourt toute l'installation ;

In a TN earthing system, one of the points in the generator or transformer is connected with earth, usually the star point in a three-phase system. The body of the electrical device is connected with earth via this earth connection at the transformer.

neutral Jennifer Levey : Your proposed translations are totally misleading where they say "auparavant de connecter l'équipement".//This is not about writing 'native' French (which I'm not qualified to do). It's about understanding the English ST, as quoted, and in context.

No problem! The question was how to translate "earth connection", not the phrase. That's why my proposal for the phrase cannot be graded. You may discuss it in the DB.
