Rally or rallye for races?
Apart from races officially named "...rallye," is the choice for or against the -e just a matter of personal preference? Would be grateful for enlightenment.

According to Oxford's, this is "a competition for motor vehicles, usually over public roads". I've not seen rallye in English.

Comment: "Thank you Kristina for a quick answer! As a non-car person, I found Peter's comment the most helpful. I know rallye is French, but I wondered if it had somehow become the preferred form for all such events (since I had to christen one, so to speak). Thank you everyone for *overwhelming* confirmation.
