... — it is more likely EN that has dropped the more fomal "How d'you do?" in favour of more relaxed expressions like "How's it going?" etc.

I don't know about EN experts, but as far as I know, "Comment ça va ?" has ALWAYS (well, at least, ever since I learnt FR in the mid-60s, which FEELS like 'forever'!) been used to mean "How are you?" etc....

Please, english experts, correct me if I am wrong: "Comment ça va?" would be a litteral translation of "How is it going?". (But I agree it's becoming a basic way to say "Comment vas-tu?")

D'accord avec tous pour la signification.
A cause de l'emploi de la forme progressive, je pense que le demandeur veut savoir comment va la vie de son interlocuteur au moment-même où il pose la question, et non savoir "comment va ta vie, globalement, ces derniers temps". La question est plus centrée sur la personne interrogée elle-même que sur sa vie.
