English term

spectrales

English Tech/Engineering
I'd like to know if this term is used to talk about a kind of glasses/lenses.
The sentence is:
Belluno and the Cadore cluster are the home of the companies making sunglasses and *spectrales* whose leadership is acknowledged the world over;

By now I'm sticking to the idea that it's a typo for "spectacles" but I'd like to be sure. I asked this in the En-Sp pair, and I have answers that "feel" it can be a kind of glasses for snow, either looking like a mirror or reflecting all kind of colors. How do you call this kind of glasses for the snow? What do you think?

Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Jun 5, 2003:
To Dusty This is a translation from Italian going to Spanish.
In fact these towns are known for their sunglasses and spectrals, there's even a museum there for them.
I just wanted not to reach conclusions too quickly.

Spectrals

Is this your answer?
"The tint is provided by glasses with a smooth spectral transmission that minimises
any change in tint under lighting having various uneven spectral power ..."
IF SO, the points should go to Marion for putting us on the right track - I'm fairly certain this is right, as there are over 1,500 google hits for "Spectral glasses"

and they are just google UK hits for glasses; there are over 28,000 hits world-wide for \"spectral glasses\", and over 150,000 for \"spectral glass\".

I think it\'s just a \"Typo\" leaving in the last \"e\" in \"spectrales\".

agree airmailrpl : I only found 18 google hits for 'spectral glasses' - how did you find the other 27,982 ?? - actually I found out how - you did a search 'with all of the words' but not 'with the exact phrase'

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you very much to you all. I remain not being sure 100%, but I see that it wasn't a silly question. Now we know that there are spectrals for the eyes."

I wonder...?

I'm not so sure we should leap to the typo conclusion; I can't give you proof of my hunch, but I wonder if this sin't perhaps a technical term to describe the kind of glasses that are used to filter out certain quite specific parts of the spectrum — for example, welding goggles, which make everything look green? Or pink glasses for dyslexics...

If this is a specialist manufacturer, they might be using this jargon term in just that sort of way; mind you, watch out, it looks like French, 'cos in English I'm certain it would be 'spectrals' — it would help if we knew what language this was coming from / going to...

Just an idea, in case it helps a bit...

agree airmailrpl : 'spectrales' is French - the best answer is Marion's 'spectral glasses'

spectral glasses

It could be spectacles, but I'm wondering if it might be SPECTRAL GLASSES, a kind of filtered glasses used apparently for viewing the sky:

or maybe
POLARLIZED SUNGLASSES?
which use "Spectral Control filters"

agree Tony M : Yes — and well done for digging out the references that I didn't have time to do... :-)
