French term
documents/pièces/écritures comptables
French to English
Bus/Financial
Accounting
These terms all seem to be used interchangeably in my text especially "documents/pièces comptables".
I have found "écritures comptables" defined as accounting entries, but the terms seems to be used much more widely than this.
Does anyone know the difference between them?
Thank you!

Note from asker:
Thanks, I just found accounting records for pièces comptables. My text says "Toutes les écritures comptables permettront l'édition des documents comptables :" so I wonder if documents comptables is the generic names for accounts. |

accounting documents/vouchers/accounting entries
Hello,
documents comptables = accounting documents (generic term)
pièces comptables = vouchers (a written record of expenditures, disbursements, or completed transactions)
écritures comptables = accounting entries
It's not really any more complicated than this.
I hope this helps.

Paula you sound terribly confused about what appears to be quite simple.
As Icetrance points out, écritures comptables = accounting entries.
"pièces comptables" (and almost certainly "documents comptables" from the context you have given us) are supporting documents (invoices, and the like) i.e. they need to be kept and made available to the auditors whose job is to ensure that the accounts are true and fair.

Thanks, Marc. After about 15 hours of checking and rechecking I'd got the terms in the right place, I think I've got! I don't think I'll be doing any more accountancy translations for a while!! |
