raised cross stitch rings a bell with me from when I used to do point de croix - the link shows you how it works. Of course I'm not sure if that fits your context and I think it depends on exactly how tou read the sentence - could it be 'au point de croix....au point levé' so both are cross stitch but one is raised, or is it just a completely different stitch?I'm certainly intrigued by the context -is this old or contemporary embroidery?it certainly sounds like the author is looking at gender representations/difference here both in terms of the stitchers and the images produced..interesting stuff.Hope my humble contribution is of help.

But are you sure this is referring to real sewing and it's not metaphorical? Perhaps you could give more context?

Perhaps not then - it was just the image I got, inspired by "main levé". I've done a lot of embroidery in my time but never come across "point levé".

Here is the full paragraph for more context: Le fil, nous le savons, ne sert pas uniquement au tissage mais aussi à la couture, à l’assemblage des pièces de tissus entre elles. Or il s’avère que la perception du fil à la surface du tissu se remarque souvent comme un dessin. Il y a dans le français une différence marquée avec précision entre un couturier et une couturière : si les deux procèdent aux mêmes gestes techniques, ils ne pratiquent pas le même métier. Cette distinction du lexique, des positions sociales et des représentations qui en découlent, X, Y et à leur suite Z l’évoquent par des travaux d’aiguilles, textes poncifs brodés au point de croix, pour la première ou pour les autres, au point levé, des dessins de femmes extraits de magazines destinés aux hommes. I think this might be the term, or possibly raised stitch embroidery. I can't find any one single definitive reference - this is on the basis of detective work, pieced together from the following references.
