dessert glacé Sirop à l’eau

French to English Other Cooking / Culinary Menu
Another menu question.

This appears in a short list of desserts available on the kids menu:

dessert glacé Sirop à l’eau

I know what Sirop à l'eau is, which is hard enough to find a succinct and appetizing way to describe in English. Evidently, here this refers to a frozen dessert made from it, perhaps something like a gratinée or maybe a sorbet, however, those both sound a little refined for a kids menu.

Perhaps slush or slushy. But I want to be sure.

Thanks in advance.

Discussion

MSA-Translation (asker) Sep 26, 2011:
Thanks for pointing this out. Looking at the menu in this light, I do think it is quite likely that it is a desert choice and a separate drink choice put together in a topographically confusing way. I will raise this issue with the client before making a final decision.

Thanks everyone for your great insight and input!

Agree I have to say I tend to agree with Isabelle here: given the rather poorly expressed list in your other question, I can't help thinking this is indeed 2 separate items: an ice-cream (or sorbet, of course!) dessert — though it's probably more likely in fact to be some kind of ready-made ice-cream like an Eskimau, Cornetto, etc. — and a drink: e.g. squash

Oh, and PS, Michael: "gratinée"?! I think you meant 'granité' > 'granita', didn't you — ice-cream would tend to melt if browned in the oven, don't you think? ;-)
Isabelle Barth-O'Neill Sep 25, 2011:
As you put a capital letter to Sirop, I am reading it as : ice cream and as a drink : Sirop à l'eau - which is hard ot find outside of France. But it is often a drink on children's menu in France !!

flavoured granita

Of course, it all depends on how much the kids' parents are paying. "Granita" is an upmarket name, and if it's a cheap place then "fruit slush" might sit better.

Google images for the two to see which seems to fit best with other menu items

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thank you for your great input. I now think that there may be a drink and a dessert being referred to here, but if they are one item, granita is especially nice, because it has an international flair as does the restaurant, though fruit slush may work best for a kids menu. I will inform the client of the ambiguity and present them with all the options."
