I'm sure this is not "thesis". In France we often also refer to the "devoir de mémoire" or 'duty of remembrance' in regards to historic events.

Thanks for the input - Of course, remembrance is the idea, but in the case of the title for a History course I think (and the internet confirms) that Memory is the term most frequently used.
