I am currently translating a trust deed from French into English. I know my question seems quite simple at first sight, but I just want to make sure I have a correct translation.
The sentence in question goes like this:
Monsieur X pourra vendre la maison de sa mère, dès qu'il aura atteint l'âge de 25 ans révolus.
For me, this means that Mr X may sell his mother's home, as soon as he has attained/reached the age of 25 years (= as soon as he his 25 years old, which actually is his 26th birthday, so he may sell the home on his 26th birthday, i.e. when he is aged 25).
Other translations that I have found include:
as soon as he has completed his 25th year
as soon as he has reached the age of 25 completed years
Now what makes me wonder is that when you look up "ans révolus" + "âgé" in dictionaries, it says "over ... years".
But what makes me wonder even more is a discussion on proz 4 years ago (http://www.proz.com/kudoz/french_to_english/human_resources/...
"la durée de la prétention va du mois de la naissance *jusqu'à l'âge de 20 ans révolus*" was interpreted as meaning 20 years + 364 days, which I think is wrong. I would think that there is a claim from the month of the person's birth until that person has reached the age of 20, i.e. as soon as the person is 20 years of age, the claim has expired etc. In that example, as in mine, I think "révolus" refers to the end of the 20 or 25 year period, not 20 or 25 years + 364 days.
So, how would you translate this seemingly easy sentence? And what's your interpretation of the French text (at what age is Mr X allowed to sell the house?)

As Writeaway correctly points out, standard dictionary entries give 'over', as in 'avoir 20 ans révolus' : 'to be over 20 years of age'
However, in the specific context given here: 'dès qu'il aura atteint l'âge de 25 ans révolus', it simply wouldn't work in EN as 'as soon as he has reached the age of over 25' — once you add the 'has reached the age of...', the 'over' becomes superfluous.

You're quite right! I was mentally extrapolating from past recollection of dictionary entries. However, in the present context, it wouldn't really work to say '...has reached the age of over 25 years', now would it?

: Yes, this works too of coruse. What would not work in English is what does work in French, including the idea of "reach" and "over". One or the other, depending on how you express the rest.

: Yes, the "révolus" is used to make sure that it is not taken to mean in his 25th year, which could be considered as the day after his/her 24th birthday.

Well, not quite, "which actually is simply on his 25th birthday" is correct.
At your first birthday, your age is exactly one full year, at your second birthday 2 years.... at your 25th birthday you have lived full 25 years (all of the 25 years are "révolus") and you're starting the 26th year of your life.
During your 26th year of life, you'll say "I'm 25 and 1 month or 25 and 2 months ... up to 25 years and 11 months and 30 days, after which comes your 26th anniversary.
The number of years at your birthday is the number of FULL years ("révolus") you have lived up to it.
