French term

automatismes

French to English Tech/Engineering IT (Information Technology) SAP environment
Appearing in a list (see third item down) under the heading:

Tests,

Documentation.

So far, I have translated this as 'Writing and setting of system administration scripts' - but I wonder if it should then simply say 'automatic' in the brackets or whether 'automatisme' here might have another meaning?

Discussion

Sylvia Smith Sep 23, 2005:
How did you translate "l'automate" in the line above? It may refer back to that, and would be helpful to know.

automatic operations

I'd play safe and do a literal translation, keeping it in parentheses as it is in the French, in case the author is trying to highlight the fact that they are "automatic"? For "automatic operations" see on-line dictionary below under "cybernétique".

Donc, les dictionnaires (Hachette, Eurodicautom, Grand Dictionnaire Terminologique) se trompent tous.

agree Charlie Bavington : yup, should be fine - automatic system back-ups and suchlike, in all probability. Automate is probably a job scheduler, BTW.

thanks Charlie
agree RHELLER : referring to any operation that is self-starting

disagree df49f (X) : automatismes: automated/automation systems/controls/control systems controlling the automatic operation of a process/machine etc.// remarque générale et non spécifique à ce contexte-ci: le fonctionnemement est automatisé grâce aux systèmes d'automatisme

so you think it's wrong in this context or wrong full stop?
