French term

condamnés à la dégradation civique

French to English Law/Patents Law (general)
" Les condamnés à la dégradation civique ne peuvent être entendus comme témoins mais seulement pour donner de simples renseignements."

Are we talking about persons sentenced to "civil damages" here?

Thanks in advance!

FULL CONTEXT:

Discussion

Jack Dunwell Jun 12, 2011:
Yes Allegro Agreed. As Bridge.
Yvonne Gallagher Jun 11, 2011:
think we're looking at different time frames here! they HAVE ALREADY lost their rights (in the past because of a PAST conviction) so NOW they can't be witnesses
AllegroTrans Jun 11, 2011:
What the text says is that persons who have been sentenced to lose their civic rights cannot be heard as witnesses in the present trial (they may only informally provide information) - so in that respect is about previous convictions of the witnesses
Yvonne Gallagher Jun 11, 2011:
Allegro, to me this is about their right or not to act as witnesses in the PRESENT trial NOT about their previous conviction or why they've lost their rights
sporran Jun 11, 2011:
Agree with AllegroTrans
Simagu (asker) Jun 11, 2011:
@gallagy2

Thank you. I am new to this forum and am still trying to figure out a few things. I will indeed make the change if your answer is selected, but the selection doesn't seem to be up to me anymore.
AllegroTrans Jun 11, 2011:
@ Gallagy2 Surely this is about "those (who have been) sentenced to loss of civic rights" so apart from a missing "d" jml's answer is correct, no?
Yvonne Gallagher Jun 11, 2011:
Hi Simagru, I checked again and really there are examples of "Civil" as well! If my answer is selected then the word can be changed when putting it in the Glossary
Simagu (asker) Jun 11, 2011:
Thank you for that important distinction!

I have changed my translation to "those who have lost their civic rights" but I do not know how to make any changes on this board.
Yvonne Gallagher Jun 11, 2011:
@Allegro
yes, accept it's probably better as "civic" and will change if selected but other answers are incorrect. These people cannot act as witnesses because of PAST convictions, i.e. they've already lost their CIVIC rightsl
AllegroTrans Jun 11, 2011:
Asker This is definitely about CIVIC rights; no Court can order the loss of Civil Rights, that would be a complete contradiction - you need to change your selection of answer here
sporran Jun 11, 2011:
They are talking about loss of CIVIC rights here, surely? I.e, the usual rights of a citizen, like the right to vote, the right to run a business, etc. CIVIL rights are not quite the same thing.

Because these people were convicted previously, they lost their CIVIC rights including the right to act as witness. They can go to court and give testimony but will not be treated as witnesses

NOT SO SURE Allegro is correct. Lots of examples of loss of civil rights as well!
