French term

de forme retard

French to English Medical Medical (general)
I am not sure about the use of this simple phrase in the context of the following sentence:

Il s'agit de XX chez qui l'on a il y a quelques mois en Téhéran, cancer prostatique métastatique à l'os. Il a semble-t-il été traité par une hormonothérapie suppressive avec des analogues de la RHLH **de forme retard**. Ce traitement n'a paraît-il pas été à des anti-androgènes mais n'a déclenché d'exacerbation osseuse.

Is this saying it was some sort of delayed-action rhLH analogue (does that even exist?) or was the treatment delayed? Your help is appreciated.

Rule 2. Long-acting and Ordinary Forms
Long-acting as used in the New Form Code classification refers to the form of a preparation and not to the active
ingredient. Long-acting (Retard) forms are only classified as long-acting if this information is provided by the manufacturer
in the literature, if implied in the name e.g. Depo Provera (Upjohn) or in the pack description. If the ingredients
are known pharmacologically to have a long duration of action and the manufacturer does not specify that the
form is long-acting, the form is classified as ordinary. The manufacturer’s marketing policy must not be changed by
the classification. Any form, which cannot be classified as ordinary e.g. long-acting, retard, depot etc is to be classified
as long-acting.
Injectable preparations with a special ‘long-acting’ formulation e.g. oil, oily suspension, aqueous suspension, ester etc for
intramuscular, subcutaneous, intra-articular and intrasynovial administration are also classified as long-acting.
Note that forms described as delayed action or delayed release are classified as ordinary unless they are also long-acting.

delayed action or delayed release is not necessarily the same as long-acting

agree Michael Lotz : I should think so too Sue

thanks Michael :-)
agree Drmanu49 : We have used the term delayed action but I think long acting fits in better in this case.

thanks Manu :-)
agree Marc-André Laniel : "Depot LHRH analogue" also gets a lot of hits.

agree Diane de Cicco : il me semble que cela convient mieux ici (long-acting = action prolongée) même si au final, on parle de la même chose
