Discussion

Peter Zauner (asker) Nov 20, 2011:
thanks to all ... contributors. I like a healthy (!) discussion here.
Yes, the term sounds bizarre at first and from the variety of entries we can see that there is no direct English equivalent to the German term.
All in all I like Ramey's entry best so it goes to him.
Ramey Rieger (X) Nov 14, 2011:
Greeting Gangels! Well, the list is quite long and comprehensive, so a general term for all of these activities would be "exercises", don't you think? Sports would only apply to some.
gangels (X) Nov 14, 2011:
Has to do only indirectly with exercise In the context, exercise prevention doesn't really make sense. Bewegung is motion rather than exercise (Körperübung). I think they mean how to hold a rigid posture, e.g. in yoga, so I would say "methods of maintaining a rigid posture" (without wobbles) or "methods to remain perfectly still"
Willem Wunderink Nov 14, 2011:
@Ramey Thanks, sport! ;-)

Nice that we can conclude and help Peter out: now he can go to bed with peace of mind.....

Same to you!
(And I really should get back to work now!! Monday....)
Ramey Rieger (X) Nov 14, 2011:
@Willem Yes, that could work. So now it's up to Peter! Have a sporty week!
Willem Wunderink Nov 14, 2011:
@Ramey -Methods of preventive exercise Ramey, I know, but our communication is way beyond that point!

In reaction to your justified comments I suggested to look for terminology that does right to the meaning and still is correct and understandable in English, and came up with:

Methods of preventive exercise

Unfortunately I am not able to amend my first input/answer.
Ramey Rieger (X) Nov 14, 2011:
Hello Willem! Yes, the diagnostic aspect is not in my suggestion, but "movement prevention" just isn't English, the comic effect is stunning, though!
Willem Wunderink Nov 14, 2011:
@Ramey Hi Ramey, if you follow the links in my answer box, you will see that the term really has a very particular significance in Germany, and the package contains various exercises and sports with preventive objectives.
These objectives range from preventing injuries and compensation for poor ergonomic work situations, to the early detection of motor skill abnormalities of children.
So please have a closer look, I really think that the descriptive translation that I gave in second instance, is the correct one: Methods of preventive exercise
Ramey Rieger (X) Nov 14, 2011:
So, I'll give it a run around the track!
J Fox Nov 14, 2011:
promotion @Ramey I like the health promotion idea too - exercise for health promotion
Ramey Rieger (X) Nov 14, 2011:
@Jayne Greetings! Yes, your answer comes closer, but this is still not the primary function of sport, is it? I believe we sometimes must state what the term to translate actually means in order to get the point across.
J Fox Nov 14, 2011:
yes I like methods of preventive exercise too - see below
Willem Wunderink Nov 14, 2011:
Suggestion: Methods of preventive exercise It does not have an equivalent in other languages, but I must agree: the literal translation does not give a clear meaning. I suggest that we look at another description, as close to the original as possible, but reflecting the meaning clearly.

The best I can think of is this:

Methods of preventive exercise
Ramey Rieger (X) Nov 14, 2011:
Hello again Peter The term in itself is somewhat bizarre, I thank you for the laughs on a Monday morning! Since this is all about sports methods and health - and not prevention of the same - why don't you call the spade, a spade? "Sports methods to promote/promoting health"? Or suchlike.

Exercise methods to promote physical fitness

I haven't found anything snappier, although that's not required here.
Peer comment(s):

disagree Willem Wunderink : Sorry, no promotion but prevention by excercise. See my 'Answer' box for examples.

Literally, yes. But just WHAT are you trying to prevent? Then the list gets longer and longer.

Injury prevention methods

I'm not sure about this one, but found a website that might be relevant:

One of the successful projects is the Würzburg SB DJK Centre for Adventure Sports and Injury Prevention “Zentrum für Erlebnissport und Bewegungsprävention” (ZEB).

preventive exercise might be another option:

The Preventive Exercise Program in the Clinical Exercise Research Center provides a variety of services that address both health and performance.

I see preventive exercise as being used in the same sense as preventive medicine.

Methods of movement prevention

It concerns a broad spectrum of preventive movement activities, some quotes:

Maybe, but I think its also about maintaining fitness
