German term
vorne (vs. vor)
German to English
Tech/Engineering
Mechanics / Mech Engineering
Hi folks.
As you expect, there is virtually no context for this. I suspect that 'vor' is used on a display screen that shows a button and this would trigger an action. For example,
Schiebertisch vor
would be Schiebertisch forward (don't worry about Schiebertisch, the customer has words for those). I view this as 'start moving something forward.
My problem is with 'vorne'. This comes in the text like this:
Bündelschieber vorne
Again, don't worry about the Bündelschieber, it is a movable part on the machine. What I assume (only based on my experience) is that vorne means that the device has been moved forward as far as it will go and this is the message on some sort of indicator or status light.
What I would like to know, since I cannot use 'forward' for both of these, what would you suggest? I would like to use forward for vor but what do you suggest for vorne?
Thanks for reading this far.
Yours,
cantrell

I would at a particle like 'in' or 'at' or specify the ‘front end' or the 'front position'.

Thanks to both Johannes and K. I. for the answers. I went with 'at the front' for this one. For some reason, I could not see the forest for the trees. Thanks again. |

How about simply using "front"?
Not a reference but there are use cases here: https://dict.leo.org/german-english/vorne
