German term

mager (hier)

German to English Science Wine / Oenology / Viticulture
der sandige, karge Untergrund ... ermöglicht ein *** mageres ***, ausgeglichenes Rebwachstum.

This should not sound negative - quite the opposite is true. The lower the yield, the better the quality. Is there perhaps a specialist term to describe this?

concentrated

By removing buds, we ensure concentrated growth within the remaining buds, and eventually, canopy and fruit development.

What we are really striving for is upward facing shoots that will give our vines a much more concentrated growth of new shoots and clusters.

Very dense plantings to create smaller vines with more concentrated growth and reduce vigour.

agree Steffen Walter : I'd thought of reduced vigour but your suggestion hits the proverbial nail on its head.

slow growth

Among the many available species, the variety "Reliance" (Vitus "Reliance") is a good example of one that's relatively slow growing and easy to control with some pruning.

German term (edited): mager

compact (vines)

Maybe something like "compact vines, and well balanced flavour".

The idea is that if the soil is too fertile, the vines grow too much and the quality suffers.

I stand corrected: compact, well balanced growth.

(makes for a) balanced vine vigor

I think it has to do with the amount of vine vigor considered optimal in the situation.
