Discussion

cclover Aug 6, 2013:
Yep - older term used in a number of European languages for early syphilis infection
crocox Aug 1, 2013:
lu·es (lz)n. pl. lues Syphilis.
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/lues
Both terms are also used in Romanian, 'sifilis' being the common one (agree with Michael).
LÚES s.n. Sifilis. [Pron. lu-es. / < germ. Lues, cf. lat. lues venerea – infecție venerică].
Anthony should choose between 'syphilis' and 'lues' depending on the style of the source text. I would use 'lues - commonly called syphilis' as in here: http://www.edgarcayce.org/are/holistic_health/data/prsyph3.h...

sorry, my Initial entry is misleading. the term lues is of course not limited to the Primary stage but is used throughout all stages, from the Primary one on.

Syphilis - commonly called lues, a word derived from Latin meaning pestilence Lues ... At this point the course of the disease is in the primary stage of syphilis.
Peer comment(s):

agree Michael Korovkin : pox! :))) Lues=Syphiilis but sounds much more elegant (and "medical-like"). Incidentally, in Russian, for instance, S is more if not entirely for common parlance while L is definitely THE medical trade talk!
