Discussion

Sarah Jane Webb (asker) Dec 20, 2007:
It wasn't an easy choice, lots of good ideas, some of them really original. However, my preference goes to Raffaella's "hitting the jackpot".
Love "winning feet down", but a little too sophisticated for some.
4 well-earned points. Brava!

hitting the jackpot

It means it was a huge success and won hands down against competitors in the shoe distribution business. HTH

Also "X was a big time/huge success" or "affirmed itself as the market leader in the shoe distribution business", but the metaphor is lost here.

Would "Winning feet down" (since we are talking about footwear) come across as nice or just reeeeaaaaally lame?

striding ahead of the competition

Just an idea - could be adapted to include the words 'footwear industry' if necessary... depends on context. Meaning is (as Raffaella says correctly) to win hands down, but just wondered if this might work better in a phrase? (particularly as you're bringing in the idea of walking, with 'striding)? :-)
