agree Oliver Simões : It sounds like a tongue twister to me. lol

Yes, crazy word. I'd never seen them together (lepidopterofauna) - only separated (fauna de lepidópteros). Thanks, Oliveira!
agree Mario Freitas :

Obrigado, Mario!
neutral Muriel Vasconcellos : In scientific texts, Lepidoptera is not usually turned into an adjective. Just sayin' - that's what I was taught in my science classes.

Sorry, Muriel, I checked that - it's quite common: https://goo.gl/Xt8ghu . By the way, this is Dennis W. Schlicht's book: https://goo.gl/hd2ZQz . One of the most respected experts in this field worldwide. He uses lepidopteran fauna ;)

Peer comment(s):

neutral Mario Freitas : Not all insects, David, only butterflies and moths and other cousins. "ptero" = wings

you're right Mario and thanks
neutral Muriel Vasconcellos : It's just the ones with wings.

Lepidoptera fauna OR butterflies and moths

This is the scientific style. It's not scientifically "correct" to turn "Lepidoptera" into an adjective.
Peer comment(s):

agree Douglas Bissell : butterflies and moths, why not make it understandable after all?

Thanks, Douglas!
neutral Matheus Chaud : I definitely agree with "Lepidoptera fauna", but not so much with saying that it's not scientifically correct to turn "Lepidoptera" into an adjective. Just one of many examples: Dennis W. Schlicht's book, https://goo.gl/hd2ZQz , an expert in this field ;)
